Since
You Were Last Here (updated January 27, 2009)
There have been some
recent changes to the Emerald Coast due to natural
forces and progress by mankind. Since your last visit, you may notice
the following:
Since You Were Last Here
There have been some changes to the Emerald Coast since your last
visit. You may notice the following:
1) The beach road between Navarre Beach
and Pensacola Beach now services Opal
Beach from
Navarre, and will connect to Pensacola Beach this spring –
hopefully, this
time it really will be completed.
2) A new Hampton Inn has opened in west
Navarre.
3) The Comfort Inn is now a Days Inn in
Navarre.
4) What was a state park on the east end of
Navarre Beach has reopened as a county
park. Amenities
include numerous pavilions, ample parking and restrooms.
5) Six new parking areas and dune
walkovers have been completed on Navarre
Beach. Two of
the walkovers are wheelchair accessible.
6) Little Bo Feet and Hugs and Hissyfits
have expanded storefronts on Miracle
Strip Pkwy. in
Fort Walton Beach.
7) A restaurant building once sitting at
the foot of the Destin Bridge has been
physically moved
to the harbor’s edge near Boogies Watersports.
8) Badly needed parking areas have been
completed on the Destin Harbor for
watersports and
fishing enthusiasts.
9) Destin Dockside now rents center-console
motorboats.
10) Nightown is going through a huge renovation and
should be ready by
spring break.
11) Landshark’s Pizza has opened in the Old Time
Pottery plaza in
downtown Destin.
12) Airport Rd. in Destin has been widened.
13) Destin 10 movie theater has reopened.
14) Ruby Tuesday has closed.
15) Johnny Oquigley’s now has a game room with pool
tables and video
games.
16) A new beach pavilion with parking, bathrooms,
picnic tables and
wheelchair
access in being built at the Hutchinson Rd. beach access
on Old Hwy. 98.
17) The large parking area, in Miramar Beach
destroyed by Hurricanes
Ivan and Dennis,
is being rebuilt.
18) Pretty Please has relocated to Grand Boulevard.
19) Red Velvet and Shoo Fly Shoo has closed.
20) Royal B’s has closed.
21) Copper Grill has closed.
22) A new restaurant called The Love Shack has opened
on East Hewitt
Road, just east
of Grand Boulevard and Sacred Heart Hospital.
23) Blue Mountain beach access now has bathrooms.
24) A new public-beach access with parking and
amenities has opened
between Seaside
and Watercolor on Hwy. 30-A.
25) Village Boutique has opened a store in Redfish
Village in Blue
Mountain Beach.

A
Perfect Day at the Beach
Less is More……Fun
Some beach goers seem to bring everything they own to the beach, and
others seem to bring nothing and have just as much fun. If you have to
put things in a cart or make more than one trip back and forth to the
room or car, you have brought too much.
The following may help you
manage packing for a fun day at the beach:
Beach necessities: small beach bag, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen,
drinking water, beach towel.
Things you may need:
camera, beach toys (only the ones you have time to
play with that day) beach chair, beach umbrella, small cooler (with
only what you can consume in one visit), flip flops (it is easier to go
barefoot), novel, magazine, cash, raft, trash bag.
Things you do not need:
Shoes and socks: There is nothing worse than trying to put them on
sand-covered
feet.
Radio: The dials, buttons and speakers will fill with sand.
I-Pods: Others have to repeat everything they say to you. Get to know
the ones
around you and enjoy the sound of the waves.
Cell phone: Leave it in the room (you should have left it at home).
Friends, family
and work should not be able to call you. Getting away from
them is part of being on
vacation.
Laptop computer: Does not mix well with salt air, sand and water. You
should have
left it at home.
Textbooks or work related material: You may bring them, but you will
never look at
them.
Bottle opener: Glass is not allowed on the beach.
Keys to other than your car and/or your room: Sand swallows keys.
Wallet: You will more than likely take it swimming.
Watch: Time is not important here.
